Types of non-medicinal treatment

Modern psychiatry has a big arsenal of non-medicinal methods of treatment. They are as follows: psychotherapy, various types of reflex-therapy, physiotherapy, therapeutic exercises, phytotherapy, homeopathy, apitherapy, hyperbaric oxygenation, hemosorption. Let us consider the basic methods of non-medicinal treatment.

Psychotherapy is defined as a method of psychic influence on a patient with therapeutic aim. Psychotherapy is the mostly indicated in borderline psychopathologic states. It may be carried out both independently and in combination with other methods. In every specific case a physician decides what type of psychotherapy is necessary for this patient. This may be group or individual psychotherapy, rational psychotherapy or hypnotherapy.

Personally-oriented psychotherapy is used in the form of individual one. Its aim is to investigate patient’s personality. For alleviation and elimination of neurotic disorders hypnosis, autogenic training, behavioral psychotherapy is used. By means of hypnotic-suggestive therapy it is possible to influence practically on all symptoms of psychopathologic manifestations (fear, anxiety, asthenia, depression), as well as on neuro-vegetative, neuro-somatic and other disorders. Autogenic training is the most often used in case of neurotic disorders (general neurotic complex of symptoms, neuro-vegetative, neuro-somatic syndromes – in higher efficacy when sympathetic tonus prevails; sleep disorders, especially difficulties with falling asleep; state of anxiety, fear, fobias mildly expressed, especially in combination of autogenic training with conditionally-reflex methods; sexual disorders, etc.). In the less degree this method is indicated to the patients with expressed asthenic, hypochondric, and hysterical disorders.

Behavioral psychotherapy is proved to be very effective in treating, first of all, obsessive-fobic disorders. Methods of fear fading in pathogenic situation by means of developed scheme of functional trainings give good results in a complex of treatment-restorative influences in such patients even in case of prolonged unfavorable course of the disease. Aim of group psychotherapy is increase of self-estimation, training of mechanisms of coping with pathogenic influences, coming onto the place of the least resistance of each type of character accentuation, increase of personal responsibility for the behavior, search for ways of familial re-adaptation, widening of spatial perspective, breaking dawn inadequate mechanisms of psychological defense.

Psychotherapy usage accelerates treatment terms, helps patient to understand his/her problems, improves social rehabilitation.

Along with psychotherapy reflex-therapy is widely used. This method of treatment causes influence on acupuncture points, or biologically active points (BAP). It is known that acupuncture, cauterization, massage, application of metal plates, etc. are related to it.

On the modern stage of treatment it is difficult to imagine treatment without usage of various physiotherapeutic procedures, which tone up patients’ psyche, strengthen muscular tonus, impact favorably on all systems and organs.

So, in the treatment of patients, biological therapy with psychotherapeutic procedures as well as all types of reflex-therapy, physiotherapeutic procedures is actively combined.
